About the Author This is one of the first books by Fred Reinfeld, who went on to become the most prolific and popular author on chess, and became an author on other subjects as well. Reinfeld wrote more than fifty books on other subjects such as checkers, coin collecting and stamp collecting. Fred Reinfeld won the 1931 New York State Championship, with Fine finishing second. Reinfeld won their individual game. In Pasadena 1932, the strongest grandmaster tournament in the USA in the decade of the 1930s, Fine and Reinfeld both got the same score of 5-6. Fine won their individual game. However, Reinfeld did better against the higher ranked players, including a win over Reshevsky and a draw with World Chess Champion Alexander Alekhine. After that however Reinfeld only played in a few other chess events. He spent the rest of his life writing about the game, not playing it. Fine, by contrast, went on to become one of the strongest players in the world. Fred Reinfeld was born on January 27, 1910. Although Fred Reinfeld is now remembered as a writer about chess and other subjects, he was also a strong player. In the 1950 USCF Rating List he was rated number 6 in the United States with a rating of 2593. He defeated Reshevsky twice and Fine once in tournament games and drew World Champion Alekhine in the grandmaster tournament in Pasadena 1932, the strongest tournament ever played in the Western United States. Reinfeld wrote more than one hundred chess books. In his day, almost all young chess players started off on his books. Nowadays, his books are mostly out of print because they were written in descriptive notation, as this one is. Fred Reinfeld died on May 29, 1964.

This book is for beginners, and it is TINY / thin for the price, check the specs before buying. I had hoped to learn about swirling resin colors and other techniques, but it stays very basic. The author uses sculpey almost exclusively for his sculptures it seems, and that is the only sculpting material he mentions. I was irritated that it was missing info I'd expected to find, but the author's dislike of mold release is mentioned at least three times. I had reconciled myself to believing the book was intended for children, and was considering passing it along to a kid, but it prominently features the F word in one of the pictures towards the end. I have seen the author's youtube vids, he does nice work / seems like a nice guy, but I found this book disappointing for the price. This hobby / occupation can be expensive, and this book was an expense I could have skipped.

This is a short and basic introduction to sculpting, mold making, and painting a vinyl toy. It is more inspiration than instruction but gives you enough information to get started and let's you work out the rest. The book could have benefitted from just a little more depth on why the author gives you the instructions he does, but that does not detract from the value of the book as-is.

This book give alot of info on one of my favorite past times. The section are not to long and allows for it to sink in.

Jay has a funny and down to earth way of teaching the art of making your own toys. He explains everything clearly and concisely, this book and his Youtube videos were, and still are, a go to reference when I need some help with casting my own charms and characters.

jay moores is the man. ive been casting resin for about a year and jay got me started. concise. everything u need to jump in resin casting. jays own pieces offer plenty of inspiration and he lays out all the groundwork for the perspiration part. check it out!

Both of the "How Brands Grow" books are must reads for any modern marketer. They are filled with solid examples showing what works and how brands exist and interact with the consumer. Even better, the examples span the world comparing a wide range of established and emerging markets.Most important, the chapters reveal the flaws many of the enthusiastic theories of brand growth. Marketing is far too often caught up in a fad - like brand love or consumer engagement. And while marketers get promoted for telling their superiors they've embraced the fads, the companies they work for suffer damage.The reader should also be ready. My experience had already shown me common sense support for what the book reveals. But for others, perhaps more steeped in the fads, the book may be challenging and irritating. I have friends it so thoroughly surprised it took them time to embrace what is said.There is also care required in reading this book. It is all about brand - and heavily salted with examples from consumables (like soft drinks) and services (like banking). There are few hard product examples (a couple of automotive and technology), but not many. But getting into the details of these weaknesses too much would undermine the absolute about this book - that it's an ABSOLUTE MUST READ for any marketer.

How Brands Grow part 2 is a must read for all those interested in understanding what makes the difference between big, successful brands and small brands.This new book brings all the insights of 'How Brands Grow - what marketers don't know' to the next level, providing practical examples on how to measure mental availability, distinctive assets and physical availability. Additionally it also provides plenty of data points on emerging markets - very useful and relevant to demonstrate that the laws of growth hold true also in less developed, often fast growing markets.I found 'how brands grow - part 2' as inspiring as the former and possibly even better in providing guidance about implementing the laws of growth in real business life.

I was very skeptical about the recommendation I got on the first book. I thought after 30 year of marketing with companies like P & G, Kraft, T-Mobile and Mars I knew enough about marketing. I was wrong. I found it to be the best clear headed marketing book I have have read in years. THere is so much baloney that passes for marketing today. This book and the first book by Sharp approach marketing from a much more realistic basis. The book explains how many platitudes about marketing are just not true. If you are serious about your craft, I suggest you read these two books.

How Brands Grow Part 1 was a brilliant, milestone publication that changed how many of us look at marketing. Treating consumer buying behavior as probabilistic rather than deterministic, and looking at marketing using data based analysis, backed by underlying fundamental theory, has been both highly influential and very useful. I therefore had very high expectations for this follow up. However, I was ultimately just a little disappointed. There is nothing wrong with the book per se, and if you haven't read the first one, I would jump straight to this edition, as it covers most of the key insights, and expands on important topics such as mental and physical availability. But I thought it could, and should have have expanded on those original ideas to a greater degree. I felt that it also badly missed examples of how strategically applying these principles delivers results in market.From a technical perspective, the section on mental availability does start to dig into the science of memory, but I thought it could have gone much deeper. For example, I would have liked to see more discussion around how the practical bottleneck in memory lies in retrieval rather than in encoding - Humans have plenty of space for memory encoding, but for the practical purposes of 'mental availability', the challenge is to have those memories activate at the time and place when they are relevant to our brands. Acknowledge that, it opens up all sorts of opportunities to tap into the science of memory, especially leveraging context, priming, co-encoding, and cuing to create mental availability at the time and place where it really counts. I would also liked to have seen more around how mental availability is impacted by competitive marketing, as what memories spring to mind first are very dependent on how competitors are soaking the market. Along with memory, I think there was room for a lot more discussion around prototype theory, which can have a big impact on how memories are encoded, categorized and retrieved.At a practical level, I would also liked to have seen more discussion around some common debates the first book triggered around potentialy atypical categories. For example, how closed networks, habits, and situations where switching costs are high (learning curves, accessories, lock and key, personal branding) impact sequential repeat buying. I was pleased to see luxury brands discussed, but it was only very briefly, at the end of the book.This doesn't in any way detract from the value and impact of the original book, which I would give a heartfelt 5 stars for it's insights into fundamental probabilistic buying behavior. But for me, that created very high expectations, especially with respect to tapping into psychology related science to uncover rules or laws that can be applied to marketing. This book does move the proverbial peanut down the road a little, but not as much as I'd hoped.

I am very grateful for this book. It finally answered many questions I had and helped me to deal with my projects.

About the Author

Colin Ellard, who works at the intersection of neuroscience and architectural and environmental design, is the author of You Are Here: Why We Can Find Our Way to the Moon, but Get Lost in the Mall and Places of the Heart: The Psychogeography of Everyday Life (forthcoming from Bellevue Literary Press). He has published scientific work in international journals in North America, Europe, and Asia for the past twenty-five years and has also contributed to the public discussion of environmental psychology through his work with museums and the media. A cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Waterloo and director of its Urban Realities Laboratory, Ellard lives in Kitchener, Ontario.

good readings.

I read non-fiction only sometimes, and was worried this topic might be a bit of technical or dry, but I was quite fascinated on almost every page with a field of science I had never before explored. Ellard splits up his material into the emotional reactions that different places manifest in us, and then breaks down those emotional responses to their technical and scientific elements without ever losing the thread of a compelling narrative.He mixes in stories from his own life, or examples of emotions caused by places that we've all felt. For instance, I know now that he loved a particular red metal can opener that was taken from him by rust, and he still wistfully thinks of it when opening a can of beans. :) (And then he describes the science of why he may feel that!)For me, though, I was hugely surprised at the amount that is unknown in this field. Ellard sometimes describes two contrasting theories for what is happening at a given time - like how we feel in places of awe - and tries to reconcile those differences. I think this should be mandatory reading for any urban planner, or anyone who has a house they want to feel like home.All in all, a fascinating read that I plan on picking up for an architect friend of mine, and maybe I'll share my copy with my aunt and sisters, but I may make them get their own.

Psychogeography is, in Ellard’s opinion, how our surroundings affect our moods and behavior. How plants make any place seem better- and make people less apt to destroy things. How featureless concrete expanses make a person nervous and unwilling to linger. How surroundings can awe, suffocate, sooth, or tempt a person (think the insides of shopping malls). He explains how and why people have these reactions, and how they can be used to manipulate people. He also goes into how digital technology is changing things, and how it could be used to alienate or integrate.This is important stuff for any architect, designer, or city planner. It’s also helpful for just about anyone who wants to understand why the feel the way they do in certain environments. One part I especially liked was when he wrote about Temple Grandin’s slaughter house designs that keep cattle calm instead of panicked as they go to their deaths- this is manipulation at its most obvious. How many places do we frequent that affect us in a similar way without our ever being aware of it? The book is technical but easily readable. Recommended.

Overly academic prose that seems to lack actual meaning. I tried, I'm theoretically interested in this topic, but could not force actual meaning from the pontificating and defining that only a professor would love.

The book's premise looked promising, but the writing is so dead and the organization of information so shoddy and shallow that about a third of the way in I realized that I knew nothing and gave up.
