About the Author
George recently retired after eleven years in the chemical industry and thirty years in local government. Born in Hartlepool, County Durham, both his father and grandfather were railwaymen and he fell in love with railways and in particular steam locomotives at the very time when main line steam was on the way out. Being simultaneously long- and short-sighted, he was somewhat surprised to be turned down by British Railways when he applied to become an engine driver. Since the railways didn't want him, he decided to write about them instead and has written extensively for railway magazines over the last decade. His first book, Wylam: 200 Years of Railway History, was published in 2012. For the last two years he has been completing a post-graduate 'Certificate in Railway Studies' run jointly by the National Rail Museum and the University of York. About the Author Philippe Jacquet is a Research Director at INRIA, a major public research lab in computer science in France. He has been a major contributor to the Internet OLSR protocol for mobile networks. His research interests involve information theory, probability theory, quantum telecommunication, protocol design, performance evaluation and optimization, and the analysis of algorithms. Since 2012 he has been with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs as head of the department of Mathematics of Dynamic Networks and Information. Jacquet is a member of the prestigious French Corps des Mines, known for excellence in French industry, with the rank of 'Ingenieur General'. He is also a member of ACM and IEEE.Wojciech Szpankowski is Saul Rosen Professor of Computer Science and (by courtesy) Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, where he teaches and conducts research in analysis of algorithms, information theory, bioinformatics, analytic combinatorics, random structures, and stability problems of distributed systems. In 2008 he launched the interdisciplinary Institute for Science of Information, and in 2010 he became the Director of the newly established NSF Science and Technology Center for Science of Information. Szpankowski is a Fellow of IEEE and an Erskine Fellow. He received the Humboldt Research Award in 2010.

About the Author
VENKATARAMA KRISHNAN, PhD, is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Previously, he has taught at the Indian Institute of Science, Polytechnic University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Villanova University, and Smith College. He also worked for two years (1974-1976) as a senior systems analyst for Dynamics Research Corporation on estimation problems associated with navigation and guidance and continued as their consultant for more than a decade. Professor Krishnan's research interests include estimation of steady-state queue distributions, tomographic imaging, biosystems, and digital, aerospace, control, communications, and stochastic systems. As a senior member of IEEE, Dr. Krishnan has authored three other books in addition to technical publications. He is also listed in, "Who is Who in America," 2010.

About the Author
Thomas R. Arp received a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan (1954) and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to Stanford University. In 1955-1956, he produced educational television for the University of Michigan. He received an M.A. in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1962 -- both from Stanford. He taught at Bowdoin College, Princeton University, University of California at Berkeley, Hull University (England), and Southern Methodist University. Macmillan published his volume, THE FORM OF POETRY, in 1966, and he received a Fulbright lectureship at University of Bucharest (Romania) in 1969-1970. Arp joined Laurence Perrine in preparing revised editions of SOUND AND SENSE, STORY AND STRUCTURE, and LITERATURE: STRUCTURE, SOUND, AND SENSE beginning in 1982. He became sole author of the books in 1997 and was joined by Greg Johnson in 2002. Dr. Arp passed away in 2015.

Greg Johnson received an M.A. in English from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in English from Emory University. Dr. Johnson is the author of twelve books of fiction, poetry, criticism, and biography, including LAST ENCOUNTER WITH THE ENEMY (Johns Hopkins, 2004), WOMEN I'VE KNOWN: NEW AND SELECTED STORIES (Ontario Review, 2007), the novel STICKY KISSES (Alyson Books, 2001), and several books on Joyce Carol Oates, including INVISIBLE WRITER: A BIOGRAPHY OF JOYCE CAROL OATES (Dutton, 1998) and JOYCE CAROL OATES: CONVERSATIONS 1970-2006 (Ontario Review, 2006). He joined the author team of PERRINE'S LITERATURE in 2002 and has been the sole author since Thomas Arp's passing in 2015.
