About the Author
Asoke K. Talukder has been with the IT industry for about 25 years. He has held senior positions in different technology companies in India and abroad. In his last industry association, he was the founder-CTO of Cellnext, the pioneering wireless technology company in India offering technology and solutions in the domain of GSM, GPRS, SMS, MMS, Intelligent Networks, CDMA, and 3G. Since January 2003, he has been with the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore and is currently the DaimlerChrysler Chair and Associate Professor at IIITB. Asoke has worked in the USA, UK, Singapore, and India for companies like Microsoft, Oracle, Informix, Sequoia, NEC, Fujitsu-ICIM, Digital, iGate, Blue Star Infotech, ICL to name a few. A postgraduate in Physics from the University of Calcutta (1976), he set up the first X.25 network in India for the Department of Telecommunications way back in 1986. Later, he set up the first Java Centre in India in 1998. He was a key engineer for Oracle Parallel Server for Hewlett-Packard HP-FX fault tolerant computers as well as for the 64 bit Informix for DEC Alpha.

He is a recipient of many international awards for innovations and professional excellence including the ICIM Professional Excellence Award, ICL Services Trophy, ICL Chief Executive Excellence award, Atlas Club Excellence Award, etc. One of his ubiquitous middleware products was awarded the IBM Solutions Excellence Award in 2001; one other product on Java Card security was recipient of an award at the GSM World Congress in 2003.

Roopa R. Yavagal completed her B.E. Computer Science from Basaveshwar Engineering College, Bagalkot, Karnataka in 1998. After her graduation, she joined the technical team at Cellnext and developed applications for cellular companies in India in the technology domain of GSM, GPRS, and CDMA. She did her M Tech from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITB) in 2001. Her areas of interest include wireless application and service creation in wireless domain. She is currently working with Symphony Services, Bangalore.

I became aware of Oliver Sacks only in the last year or two of his life, through interviews, articles about his essays and autobiography, and his contributions to WNYC's Radiolab. Every time I heard him speak or read his words, I was struck by what a beautiful, gentle man he seemed to be. And when I heard he had been diagnosed with metastatic cancer and was about to die, I was deeply saddened. His story, which I had just come to know, was coming to an end.This book is a very short read... A collection of some of his final essays. Though I had read some of them before - or heard him tell some of these stories in interviews, reading them again reminds me about what I love about Oliver Sacks' perspective and reminds me about what I'm grateful about in my own life.

I read Gratitude as soon as I received it, and will read it again, over and over. It is especially comforting to someone moving through their later years. Oliver Sacks always had a special place in my heart.....a beautiful, brilliant, tender soul. He'll be missed.

A neurologist who gained his greatest renown for his ability to write about his profession in a thoroughly human way, Oliver Sacks passed away in August of 2015. His literary legacy consists of these four short, personal, profound essays written in the last two years of his life as he contemplated the facts of age and dying.The essays are presented in chronological order, beginning with “Mercury," in which Sacks recounts his love of elements and atomic numbers, allowing him to state “at seventy-nine, I am gold.” He enumerates some of the negative aspects of aging, such as slowing reactions, flagging energies, the tendency to forget names, and the looming fears of “dementia and stroke.” But he can still declare that he’s looking forward to being 80. “My Own Life” was composed after his diagnosis of a recurrence of fatal cancer. Here he cites philosopher David Hume, who wrote, at a similar juncture, “I now reckon upon a speedy dissolution.” He harks back to his attraction to the elements in “My Periodic Table.” He notes that on his desk is a “little lead casket” for his 82nd birthday, wonders if he will live to see bismuth (83), and feels almost sure he will miss the murderously radioactive 84th: polonium.In “Sabbath,” the last of the four writings, Sacks recalls growing up in a close-knit orthodox Jewish home, and particularly the rituals of Shabbos: “Kiddush accompanied by sweet red wine and honey cakes…” But this idyllic cultural picture was fractured when Sacks admitted to his father that he had sexual feelings for other boys. His mother shrieked at him, making him hate religion. Leaving home, he struggled with addiction to amphetamines, but later found stability and solace in the work that inspired his book AWAKENINGS.Thus began a “lonely but deeply satisfying, almost monkish existence.” Sacks devoted himself to the case histories of his and other patients, those whose unique maladies, always presented with respect, even reverence, provided material for popular books like THE MAN WHO MISTOOK HIS WIFE FOR A HAT and SEEING VOICES. I can count on one hand the number of books I recall giving a five star rating. I just do do it lighly. however, in his calm and ever rational self, Oliver Sacks would be equally impressed that felt this rating approprste. this is a book to savor your life and to also prepare for the final passing. the opening quote tells all in the way only Dr. Oliver Sacks could do. it reads:I am now face to face with dying, Yet I'm not done with living. here, I can yes, I did enjoy an afternoon sitting on marble steps and eating Ice Cream with Dr. Sacks. I was reeling from a very poorly understood diagnoses on my youngest Child. Dr Sacks took his afternoon to explain it all in great detail. that stregenth end me. by the time the Ice cream was long gone and enjoyed, Dr. Sachs had equipped me with greater understanding than many of my sons Doctors had in those early years. I for one, will never forget this intelligent, very kind person. rest well Dr Oliver Sacks.

Gratitude is a short but profound reflection on life and death, "what is meant by living a good and worthwhile life--achieving a sense of peace within oneself" (p. 45). Rather than focusing on loss as his life came to an end, Sacks reflected on the those things that gave meaning to his life, including the joys and hopes, griefs and disappointments. All taught him something that gave meaning to his journey.This book is beautifully set, printed and bound, and would make a wonderful gift for those moving on in years to help them too reflect on the meaning of their lives. With just four short essays it can easily be read in a moment of quiet at home, in a park, at the beach, on a mountain trail, during a personal retreat. It is sure to enrich those who will pause long enough to read and reflect. And in our time in the U.S. when more States are considering physician assisted suicide, it can add a new dimension to the discussion.

All of these short essays have appeared elsewhere, but it is wonderful to read Oliver Sacks' thoughts written under the certain sentence of death from cancer. I hope that reading these short essays encourages others to go back to explore the rich delights found in his earlier books.

I absolutely love all the previous books I've read by Oliver Sacks. This one was just too short (64 very small pages), and too lacking in substance. Such a great and fascinating man. I don't regret buying it for Dr. Sacks' estate and in his honor. But I would hardly recommend it. Read his other books, if you haven't already.

About the Author
Robert Skinner has degrees in history (Old Dominion University) and library science (Indiana University) and studied creative writing at the University of New Orleans. He's widely known for his non-fiction writing on the career of African-American novelist Chester Himes and on the American hard-boiled crime story. He's the author of two previous Wesley Farrell novels, Skin Deep, Blood Red, (1997) andCat-Eyed Trouble (1998). He makes his home in New Orleans where he's University Librarian at Xavier University of Louisiana.
