This book has been sitting on my must read shelf since the year began. I have read the history of Salem and the Witch trails many times over the years and I still learn something new. This book is filled to brim with new information.Many books like to focus on victims, and some even focus on "the afflicted"; those that accused their neighbors of witchcraft. Professor Baker though goes much farther than that and talks about the judges, the people in power and in particular the two Mathers, Cotton and Increase, the learned ministers at the center of this storm.The term "A Perfect Storm" gets thrown around a lot, but here it is appropriate. There was so much going on here that made the witch craze happen here when it was dying out everywhere else. It really was the last gasp of a dying movement of the Old World in the New World.It was the start of the end of Pre-American Puritanism.In this book Salem and 1692 take on a level of cultural impact that the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 did in the United Kingdom.The book is long, 400+ pages, and full of names. But those names belonged to people and those people left others behind. So Prof. Baker also delves into the impact these witch trials had on the new experiment that would become America.This is easily one of those books you can read, do a little more research or reading on the subject elsewhere, and then come back to and learn something new still.If I have one complaint, and that is way too strong of a word, it is that the last chapter was not long enough. I would have loved to have learned more about the cultural impact of 1692 on modern culture and how it shaped America. But that would be a complete other book.Prof. Baker gives us not only a well researched and well-detailed book, he gives us a book that is easy to read and relate to. There was so much going on back in 1692 that we can relate to today.The history of Salem is the history of America. The witch trials of 1692 are also part of America; our darker past that some (like the town of Danvers to a degree) would like to forget.I also listened to the audio book. After listening to interviews with Prof. Baker I kinda wish he had narrated it himself.

If you're interested in learning about the Salem Witch hysteria of 1692/3, you'll find that bookstores and libraries are loaded with options, not to mention websites, podcasts and more - it can be overwhelming. (It's a topic worthy of so many books, of course!) Moreover, academic approaches to this period have varied widely over the last century, with more than a few pushing fairly fringe beliefs (i.e., "It was mold that made them do it!") into unjustified prominence or relying on incomplete records or rumors ("they were fortune-telling!") to advance arguments.Baker does none of that, with an accessible but scholarly look at the period and the hysteria. It's a solid, modern, thoughtful introduction to the period, covering all of the major bases including the run-up and aftermath, and drawing at least one fascinating parallel to present day.Instead of approaching the era on a straight timeline, he looks at it thematically - the accusers, the accused, the trials - making it easier to follow key trends and events as they unfold without being overwhelmed by Proctors, Putnams, etc.Since reading this, I've read a few other modern treatments of the Salem witch crisis; this remains my hands-down favorite, and the first one I'd recommend to anyone looking to learn more about this fascinating period in early American history.

As someone who grew up in Massachusetts but didn't know much about the history of the Salem Witch Trials, I found this to be a comprehensive review of that time and place. Solid insights into the political, economic and religious cross-currents underway during the late 1600's as the Massachusetts Bay Colony evolved and touches on the broader activities underway throughout New England during a transformative time. Nice review of events as much of the focus in history books I've read previously emphasize the later eras just prior to or during the Revolutionary War and not so much on earlier periods. Format of outlining the details of the actual trials at the start of the book and then going back to chronicling the events leading up to them was an informative way to approach the subject. Good read for those wishing to have a better understanding of the era and some interesting analogies to our current world.

I would place Musashi-san's Book of the Five Rings on par with classical teachers like Sun Tzu, Laozi. His book lacks detail compared to some of the classics, but that is one of its strengths. He spends approximately 1/6th of the short book on the movements and tactics for sword-fighting, which may be of varying value to readers - depending on their interest on the subject.Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" places emphasis on large scale military operations; which lends itself to modern business (in the mind of the reader, and in many modern expositions on a domain-by-domain basis) - supply chains, market saturation, globalization, operational budgeting, etc., Musashi-san's "Way" is likewise applicable. Musashi-san focuses on large scale and small scale (individual) battle, offering useful comparisons and contrasts. For me, the individual focus was extremely insightful and personal. It may suit individuals who have situations of high responsibility or discretion (e.g., negotiations, debate, martial arts, software development), or cases where an individual does not have an abundance of resources or allies - and opportunity is gained through competition.The book is highly quotable, and I found myself reading this short <100 page book over a month's time because every few pages gave me something to think about, research, mull over, and discuss. I wish I had known about this book sooner, as he does an excellent job demonstrating this approach to learning.

 Unfortunately I can't give a review on the content as the book I received is incomplete. Yes, every other page is blank. And because I took to long to get to reading it, I can't return it. At least it wasn't very expensive. You get what you pay for I guess.

The Book of Five Rings) is the definitive book on Samurai Philosophy by the archetype of The Wandering Samurai himself, Miyamoto Musashi. Throughout his remarkable life, Musashi developed a philosophy and a style all his own. As stated early in the text, his philosophy is not Budhism, nor Taoism nor any other existing philosophy. It is rather a hard won and practical philosophy, almost a code of conduct and a way of viewing the world that is not bound by esoteric nor abstract thinking. Instead, his writing is about a gradual awakening and clarity of thought that his many and varied experiences led him to. This is for the Kindle version upgraded to audio.This is the first time I have listened to this classic Japanese work having read it twice before this audio version. I must say that it is much better listening to an excellent narration than to the voice in my head. The principles applied in this book explained through the use of the samari sword has stood the test of time. These principles have been successfully adopted and applied in Japanese business in the modern age. It is a wonderful little book that I will probably listen to again sometime in the future.

I bought this as a gift, the material is apparently very dense due to translation. It was described to me as being likely the exact translations of the passages, rather than a narrative with artistic liberties to match a modern audience.That may be good or bad depending on your goals for the work, but my friend mentioned having to reread passages several times to unpack the meaning of the writing - for the whole book. He mentioned feeling like he had all his own thoughts on the wisdom of the book (as the translator doesn't do much to weave the components together), but it took a lot of work to get there.

-This book was made for the intention of improving ones skill in the way of the sword, if you are not familiar with sword fighting techniques you may find trouble understanding.-The writer is a famous warrior, not a scholar... therefore there is a lack of expression and elaboration. Hence, you read 'this can not be expressed in words' so often, you would grasp what he means via practical practice.-The writer gives personal views which sometimes demote other schools in way of the sword, which sometimes can be at fact and sometimes otherwise. Some skills can work out great for some while doesn't work out so fine for others.At the end, the information provided in the book of five rings are very useful in terms of opponent vs opponent of any kind, even in a chess game of mind vs mind, if you got the imagination and analyzing skill to find the connection with other real life satuation where you have to go up against someone physically or emotionally. if it wasn't for those 3 points mentioned above, I would have gave it 5/5 stars, still, I am very glad I bought the book.
