When I received this book I was disappointed because I thought, by the description, that it was written this year. I looked it up and when I saw the cover of the initial printing I was sure that I'd read it in the 1980s, and I almost returned it.Thank goodness that I didn't! I could hardly put this book down. It was extremely well written and read more like a novel. Too often true crime authors spend too much time on the investigation and trial. Being a fan of Ann Rule's style of writing about the people involved, I found Evidence of Love to surpass the majority of true crime books that I've read.My only complaint is that there were no pictures. As I read I often did searches on my phone to try to find the photos of Candace Montgomery, Betty Gore, their husbands and others.This was an excellent book and I highly recommend it.
A horrible tale, but so engrossing because of the way it was written. A really true page turner. Loved it.
Despite the grisly nature of this true crime novel, it is also an interesting delve into the minds of both victim and perpetrator, plus an interesting account of small town America - its cultural principles and pretences and what really goes on in people's heads in their homes and in their churches (sometimes). It is also a very gripping story about the justice system and how people operate from within. And how close friends of the perpetrator and strangers, all in their individual ways, dealt with an abominable crime also kept me reading. But what is most fascinating of all about this book is how two ordinary suburban housewives came to find themselves face-to-face in the horrid situation that they did. The scene slowly unravels for the reader until we, too, are facing what can only be a horrendous outcome. The last chapter is an excellent summary (or surmise if you like) of what went on in the minds of those two women in the utility room of a suburban home. A good can't-put-down read.
I saw this and was intrigued. It was available for Kindle so I got it and read all day... it was a great way to spend a cold Ohio Sunday afternoon
Being an avid reader, I've read hundreds of books and for me, they fall into three basic categories: The books that don't keep my interest and I put down, those that hold my interest from beginning to end and lastly the ones that are almost impossible to put down, this book falls into the latter category. I'm very busy and usually read nightly to unwind and relax before bed however, I looked for every opportunity to steel a few minutes for this book and constantly ignored the clock in favor of reading more, sleeping less. The actual crime itself is intriguing but that alone cannot keep one invested if the case facts and testimonies are presented in a clumsy and boring manner.
This is true crime/tragedy narrative at its best. I hunted this book down after seeing Barbara Hershey on a Johnny Carson Show from the mid-80s on Antenna TV. She portrayed a main character in the movie version, and her conversation piqued my interest. The writers are certainly gifted, and the cooperation of a fairly large group of the people involved put it in the rarefied air of "great book". For all the insight I derived from it, I truly thank each contributor. If American drama where all the bad stars come together against the odds is your interest, this one is a total winner. The next to last chapter which analyzes the perspectives of the two ladies is interpretation at it summit.
The book is very well written, and definitely takes you into the mind of victim and perpetrator. As far as true crime books go, I found it to be top notch and very suspenseful.
This book was an interesting, easy read. The crime was a very unique one to say the least! An ax murder carried out between two women is a very unlikely crime! The author, John Bloom, did a great job telling the story, the back story and the events of the trial including the decisions and personality of a very bad judge!!It is disappointing that there are no pictures of the people involved but if you are looking for a book that you can relax and read without having to think to hard about people and places this is the book for you! I definitely recommend it to all true crime buffs!
